The Signs of a Quality Fencing Contractor

Choosing a fencing contractor is a bit unfair on the homeowner, when you think about it. You're handing over a few thousand dollars for work where most of the quality is buried in the ground or hidden behind panels the moment it's finished. You often can't judge the fence itself for years. So really, you're not choosing a fence — you're choosing a person to trust.

The good news is that quality contractors give themselves away early, and so do the ones to avoid. Here's what to look and listen for, from someone who's been on both sides of a lot of quotes.

The signs you've found a good one

They come and look at your property. A quality contractor won't price your fence off a photo or a map. They walk the boundary, check the fall of the land, look at access, and inspect the state of your old fence — because footings, slope and drainage decide the job, and you can't see those from space.

They talk about the parts you can't see. Listen for footings, post depth, concrete, drainage, keeping the base off the ground. A good contractor brings these up unprompted because that's where they earn their money. One who only talks colours and price is skipping the bit that matters.

They give you a clear, itemised, written quote. Scope, height, material, gates, what's included, what's excluded, how variations are handled. Clarity up front is how they show you they've got nothing to hide.

They're QBCC licensed — and happy to prove it. In Queensland, fencing and retaining work over a set value legally requires a QBCC licence. A quality contractor gives you their number without hesitation. Ours is 15416911, and you can check any licence for free on the QBCC website.

They're insured. Public liability at minimum. Ask, and expect a straight answer.

They explain the "why," not just the "how much." When they cost more than the cheap quote, they can tell you exactly what that extra buys — and it's usually the difference between a fence that lasts and one that doesn't.

They're realistic about timing and hiccups. Honest contractors tell you what could delay the job and how they'll handle surprises, rather than promising you the world and disappointing you later.

They stand behind the work. A clear warranty, and a straightforward answer to "what happens if something goes wrong?"

They treat your enquiry like it matters. They turn up when they said they would, they communicate, and they don't leave you chasing. How they treat you before you've paid is the best preview you'll get of how they treat you after.

The red flags worth walking away from

  • A quote given without seeing your property. It's a guess, and guesses become variations.
  • No QBCC licence number, or reluctance to share it.
  • Pressure to sign today or a "discount if you decide now."
  • A large cash deposit up front, an odd payment method, or a bank account name that doesn't match the business.
  • A price dramatically below everyone else. That's not a bargain — it's a cost you haven't found yet.
  • No written quote, just a number over the phone.
  • Vague answers about footings, drainage or what's included. Vagueness protects them, not you.

One extra warning worth taking seriously

There are fake operators out there taking deposits for fencing and retaining jobs and then disappearing. Before you transfer money to anyone — us included — confirm the QBCC licence is registered to the real company, phone the business on a number you found yourself rather than only the one on the quote, and confirm the bank details by phone. We've written a full pre-deposit checklist on exactly how to do this. Two minutes of checking can save you thousands.

The bottom line

You don't need to become an expert to hire a good one. You just need to notice who takes the details seriously before you've paid — because that's exactly who'll take them seriously once the job is underground and out of sight.

The contractor who walks your block, talks footings and drainage, shows you their licence, and puts it all in writing is telling you who they are. Believe them. That's the difference, and it's always in the details.
