How Long Does It Take to Install a Fence?

'How long will it take?' is one of the first things people ask, usually because they're picturing weeks of upheaval. The truth is most fences go up faster than expected — here's a realistic timeline from first call to finished fence.

Before the install: quoting and planning

We aim to get a preliminary quote back within 24 hours, then arrange a site visit to measure properly and lock in the details. From there it's booking into the schedule and ordering materials. This lead-in varies with how busy we are and material availability, and it's usually the longest part — the build itself is quick.

The install itself

For a typical residential fence, the actual work is often one to three days:

• Day one — remove the old fence if there is one, set out the line, and concrete the posts.
• Curing — posts need time for the concrete to set before rails and panels go on. Sometimes that's a wait between visits.
• Finishing — rails, panels or palings, gates, and a clean-up.

A retaining wall, a long run, or an automated gate adds time — those are bigger builds.

What can add time

• Wet weather (you can't set posts well in a bog).
• Tricky access or a sloping site.
• Rock or services underground.
• A neighbour cost-share that still needs sorting.
• Council sign-off on a taller fence or a pool barrier.
