Nearly every failed retaining wall we're called out to comes down to the same two things. Neither of them is the part you can see.

Drainage and footings — every time

Water builds up behind a wall with nowhere to go, the pressure doubles, and the wall gives. Or the footings were too shallow for the load. Both are invisible once the job's done, which is exactly why a cheap wall looks fine on day one and leans by year three.

How we stop it

• Proper drainage — ag-drain, free-draining gravel backfill and weep holes so water escapes instead of building pressure.
• Footings sized to the load — set to depth, not guesswork.
• Galvanised steel H-beam posts, not buried timber — steel set below ground doesn't rot the way cut timber posts do, so the structure stays stronger for far longer.
• Engineering where it's required — certified and compliant, not cut around.

What a wall done right costs

Retaining walls are priced per lineal metre, not per square metre. As a broad guide they commonly run from around $200 to $2,000+ per lineal metre, depending on height, wall type, drainage, engineering and site access. The cheapest wall is the one you only build once.
