Do You Need Council Approval for a Driveway Gate in Queensland?

It's a fair question, and the answer is usually simpler than people fear. But there are a few things worth checking before you put in a driveway gate, and it's better to know now than after.

A standard gate in a boundary fence

For a normal driveway gate set into a dividing or front fence at a normal height, you generally don't need a separate council approval — it's treated as part of the fence. Standard boundary fencing up to the usual height limits typically doesn't require building approval in Queensland.

Where it can change

• Height — very tall gates and fences (generally over 2m) can tip into needing building approval.
• Corner blocks and sight lines — near a driveway or intersection, some councils have rules so a gate or fence doesn't block visibility for drivers.
• Character or heritage overlays — some suburbs and streets have extra rules on what you can build at the front.
• Gates opening onto the footpath — a gate shouldn't swing out over public land; this is a common one we design around with a sliding or inward-swing gate.
