Aluminium vs Colorbond Fencing: Which Is Right for You?

Both are low-maintenance and suited to the Queensland climate — but they solve different problems. Here's how to pick.

Aluminium and Colorbond are two of the most popular low-maintenance fences we install, and customers often can't quite pick between them. They both handle the Queensland climate well — but they solve different problems. Here's the honest comparison.

Colorbond — privacy and a solid boundary

Colorbond is steel sheet fencing with no gaps. Its strengths: full privacy from both sides, a clean modern look, genuine wind and noise blocking, and a big colour range. It's the go-to for back and side boundaries where you want to close the yard off. It won't rot or get eaten by termites, and an occasional hose-down is the only upkeep.

Aluminium — see-through, pool and feature areas

Aluminium is a slatted or tubular metal fence you can partly see through. Its strengths: it suits pool fencing (with the right spacing), front yards where you want to show the garden, sloping ground (it steps neatly), and a lighter, more decorative look. It's rust-resistant and low-maintenance like Colorbond, just with a very different feel.

Quick way to choose

  • Want privacy and to block wind and noise? — Colorbond.
  • Fencing a pool or a front yard? — aluminium (pool-compliant where needed).
  • Steep or stepped block? — aluminium handles slope neatly, though Colorbond can be raked too.
  • Want to show off the garden? — aluminium.

You can mix them

Plenty of homes use both — Colorbond on the private boundaries, aluminium at the front or around the pool. There's no rule that says one fence for the whole property.
