What Builders Should Look for in a Commercial Fencing Contractor

If you're a builder or project manager, the fencing package is rarely the biggest line on the job — but the wrong fencing sub can still cost you time, compliance headaches and a defect on handover. Here's what actually matters when you engage one.

Licensing and insurance that stack up

The basics, but check them properly: a current QBCC licence for the work, public liability cover, and workers' compensation. On a commercial or government site these aren't a formality — they're what keeps the head contractor covered if something goes wrong. Ask for the certificates, don't assume.

Can they read a drawing and hit a program?

Domestic fencers and commercial fencers aren't the same animal. On a build you need someone who can work to plans and specifications, coordinate with other trades, hit program dates, and not hold up practical completion. Ask what commercial jobs they've delivered and who for.

Compliance and documentation

• Do they understand the relevant standards for the fence type (pool barriers, security, acoustic)?
• Will they provide the paperwork you need for handover?
• Do they follow proper protocol underground — Before You Dig, and private locators where needed — so a service strike doesn't become your problem?

Do they actually turn up and communicate?

On a program, a sub who goes quiet is worse than one who's a bit dearer. You want clear quoting, someone who answers the phone, and a crew that leaves a tidy site for the next trade.
