Real price ranges per metre for Colorbond fencing in Brisbane, what pushes the price up, and a worked example for a typical backyard.

In this post:
It's the first thing everyone wants to know. Fair enough. You can't plan a fence without a number.
A lot of companies won't give you one until they've been out. I understand why. Every yard is different. But I think you deserve a realistic range before anyone visits, so here it is.
These ranges are the same ones our online quote tool uses. They're a guide to plan with, not a quote. We always confirm the exact price after we've measured up.
For a supplied and installed Colorbond fence in Brisbane, this is what we'd expect:
That covers posts set in concrete, rails, panels, labour, and offcuts and rubbish taken away when we finish.
A sloping block. Raking or stepping the panels to follow the ground is extra work. Allow roughly $30 to $60 more per metre.
Taking out the old fence. Removal and disposal usually adds about $25 to $40 per metre. If you'd rather pull it out yourself, you can save that.
A concrete plinth along the bottom. It fills the gaps on a slope, holds soil back and stops dogs digging under. Allow about $90 to $140 per metre on top of the fence.
Gates. As a guide, a single gate is around $1,000 to $1,500. Double driveway gates run around $2,000 to $4,000. A sliding gate is more again, and a motor adds a further allowance.
Hard access or tricky ground. Narrow side paths, lots of steps, rock, or old footings in the way all take more time. We tell you about these at the quote, never on the day.
Asbestos. If your old fence is fibro, it may need a licensed removalist before we start. That's a separate cost.
Say you have a typical backyard side fence. It's 25 metres long, 1.8 m high, on flat ground, with an old timber fence to remove.
If it's a dividing fence and you're splitting it with your neighbour, that's about $2,300 to $3,500 each.
You'll find cheaper prices online. Some ads quote well under these ranges.
Sometimes that's genuine. Often, though, the savings come from the parts you can't see. Shallow post holes. Thin concrete. Panels buried in the soil. No removal included. A deposit taken and a slow start.
A fence that leans after the first storm, or a job that's half-finished, ends up costing far more than the difference between two quotes.
When you compare quotes, compare what's included, not just the total.
Here's one most people miss. If a quote adds 10% GST, the business should be registered for GST. Some aren't, and they charge it anyway.
It takes about a minute to check. Put the ABN from the quote into ABN Lookup at abr.business.gov.au and look at the GST line. If it says they're not registered, they shouldn't be charging you GST. On a $6,000 fence, that's $600 that shouldn't be there.
They're usually in a similar range per metre. Colorbond needs no painting or staining and won't rot, so it often works out cheaper over the life of the fence.
Usually not. In Queensland, neighbours generally share the cost of a standard dividing fence equally. Our quote tool can even write a message you can send your neighbour.
Because slope, access, soil and the old fence all change the job. A range lets you plan. The written quote after we measure is the price you pay.
Only if the business is registered for GST. Check their ABN on ABN Lookup. If they're not registered, they shouldn't be adding GST.
